How often should you wash your bras?

We've all wondered (by we, I mean ladies) how long we can wear our bras before we toss them into the washer. Especially if the bra is your favourite, holds your assets better and you feel comfortable in them, then wearing it every day won’t be a bother at all. Bras aren’t the only things we like to repeat but if you do, here’s what you should do

Washing your bra after every wear could damage it

For those of you who are clean freaks, I think it’s time you stayed away from the detergent. Washing your bra after every war could do more harm than good. It damages the elasticity, which is very essential in providing the required support.

Remember that once your bra loses its shape, the fit is compromised. Relax… give your bra a break.

Three of four wear is ok if you don’t get really sweaty

Your activity level can determine the number of times you wear your bra. For instance if you spend a lot of time in the sun, you’ll sweat a lot so it’s ok to wash to it quite often. However, if you only wear your bra for a few hours in the day, that cannot be calculated as a ‘wear’. Washing gets rid of germs and oils that accumulate as you wear your bras so the more oil you produce will determine how often you wash it.

That really sexy lacy bra you wear for that special occasion (when you went to meet your significant other) can be spared a washing. But please by all means wash your sports bra after every use.

Rotation is just fine

Don’t worry too much about rotating your bra.

You should have several bras to rotate through to avoid stressing elastic over time, but wearing the same bra two days in a row isn't an issue. Taking it off at night should allow plenty of time for it to recover its shape and elasticity. If it can't do that in eight to 12 hours, waiting an extra day won't make a big difference.

Always heed the care tag.

In general, bras like a gentler bath to keep them in good shape, but check the labels for the best instructions.

If you decide to wash a bra in the machine instead of the hand, select the most delicate cycle your washer offers.

Mesh bags also help prevent bra hooks from snagging other garments. But also hook the bra before you throw it in the wash, and consider a mild detergent since it'll be gentler on the fabric.

Avoid the dryer.

I suggest laying bras flat to dry. The heat and agitation of a dryer can damage the bra's elasticity and shape, and hanging it can cause stretching.

Before you lay your bra out, make sure the cups aren't misshapen or folded, and use a towel to blot up excess water (don't wring or twist the bra). You can do same for sport bras. Even though they seem sturdier, they require careful tending to keep them as supportive as possible.

Bra storage is also very important. Line them up in a drawer, like they'd do in the store. Crumples, creases, and haphazard piles can cause the bras to become twisted.
