Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged political leaders to prioritise job creation during their time in power to avoid creating fiscal burdens for their successors.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the current employment gap should not be ignored, as it only exacerbates fiscal challenges when political transitions occur.

Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Friday, February 28, Mr Ablakwa emphasised the need for governments to take advantage of available space and resources to employ citizens rather than leaving them unemployed.

“When you are in power and there is space, we know we can employ, let’s employ people. Let’s not keep them at home unemployed,” he said.

He warned that when a government loses power and has left large numbers of people without jobs, it can lead to significant fiscal burdens on the incoming administration.

The Minister further implied that political leaders should not engage in the practice of shifting the weight of these burdens onto their political opponents after elections.

"let’s not keep them at home unemployed then you lose an election then you want to create fiscal burdens on your opponents," he urged, calling for forward-thinking strategies that prioritise job creation and the effective use of government resources to reduce unemployment.
