The bravery of a Police Chief Inspector with the Ashanti regional police command has been hailed after he was injured in his attempt to foil an alleged plot to murder a Ghanaian returnee from South Korea.
The Station Officer of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT), Chief Inspector Isaac Ofori was left with a fractured arm while responding to a plot allegedly masterminded by the wife of the returnee and her boyfriend.
The two suspects, in their quest to eliminate their victim to steal an amount of USD30,000 from him, hired a hitman to carry through the plot.
When 32-year-old Adwoa Aboagyewaa woke up at about 12:30 a.m on Friday July 7, 2023, she had one thought: to give access to the room she shared with the husband, Solomon Danso, to a man she and her boyfriend had allegedly hired to kill the husband.
Though the couple had been married for some time and have two children, little did the husband, domiciled in South Korea, know he was living with an enemy under the same roof.
Coming events, they say, cast their own shadows. An amount of USD14,000 that belonged to Mr. Danso mysteriously ‘vanished’ into thin air from the couple’s Bremang UGC apartment.
The two lovebirds, in an attempt to allegedly steal an additional USD16,000, might have led them to hatch a plan to kill the ‘hen that lays the eggs’ in a bizarre yet tragic manner.
Police sources say a hit man was hired by the suspects where a fee, place and time for the operation code named ‘Danso Must Go’ was agreed between the parties.
The hitman, after receiving part payment, confided in Chief Inspector Isaac Ofori at the 11th hour of the plot to kill Mr. Danso.
A police team from SWAT was put on standby whilst Chief Inspector Ofori acted as an Uber driver for the hit man.
Mrs. Danso, as expected, woke up from her sleep and immediately opened the doors to the couple’s apartment to give easy access to the hitman to kill a man she has two kids with.
The woman was arrested by Chief Inspector Ofori, the cop-turned-Uber driver, a few moments after she led the hitman into the apartment.
Chief Inspector Ofori then drove the first suspect, Adwoa, who had then called his supposed boyfriend, King George, to meet her at a spot at Bremang on the main Kumasi-Techiman road to collect the balance for the hitman.
A police team was therefore put on standby to help arrest the other suspect.
King George started panicking moments after entering the Toyota Corolla vehicle after picking signs of running into the hands of police.
He attempted to jump out of the vehicle which was in motion.
A struggle then ensued between Chief Inspector Ofori who was behind the steering wheel and the suspect who was seated at the front passenger seat.
Before the arrival of the police standby team, the inspector had a fractured arm while the Toyota Corolla car had its gear lever, interior and driving mirror damaged in the ensuing struggle.
The suspect then escaped into the Bremang township.
Police have since launched a manhunt for King George, a gym operator at Kronum in Kumasi.
But the heroism of Chief Inspector Ofori has been hailed as an epitome of diligence in the call to duty of officers who place themselves in high-risk and life-threatening situations in service to the public.
Mr. Danso says he remains grateful to Chief Inspector Ofori for saving his life.
Meanwhile, Adwoa Aboagyewaa was remanded into police custody when she made a second appearance before the Asokore Mampong District Court on August 1, 2023.
