Ghana’s coach put on a brave face as he talked of the heartache of missing out on quarter final place after seeing his side record a third loss at CHAN.
Despite a much improved performance and a number of changes to the side Ghana succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Niger. Addo spoke to cafonline relating how their two weeks in Kenya was not sufficient preparation.
“I take responsibility for the results in this tournament. It’s a young team and we have not been together for a long period. I thought we played our best football today and I am not disappointed with that but with the result," said Addo.
The Ghanaian mentor also maintained that mistakes have been the downfall of his side, “Two mistakes against South Africa, a basic mistake against Zimbabwe and another basic mistake tonight cost us“ lamented Addo.
Having said all this Addo admitted they had lost to a good team. “The team we were afraid of most coming into this competition was Niger. They beat Nigeria and that meant they were a threat. I was most concerned about Niger in our group and they proved me right tonight and I congratulate them on qualifying to the quarter finals.
Addo concluded by saying “We wanted to go all the way and meet Sudan and avenge our 1970 loss in Africa Nations Cup held here in Sudan but Niger spoilt that dream for us.”
Captain: Emmanuel Clottey
The Ghanaian captain was unable to take part in the Niger match due to an injury but availed himself to talk to cafonline after his side’s loss and elimination from the competition. Looking quite downbeat Clottey who apologized to fans after the loss to Zimbabwe said “What I can say is what God ordained, there is nothing that can be done about it”.
The captain was really at a loss for words and only managed to add that, “We tried our best but Niger beat us and we hope to be better next time”.
Ghana finished bottom of group B with no point and a mere one goal scored while conceding four.
