The Manager in charge of Pediatric Unit of the Koforidua Regional Hospital, Madam Mary Yvonne Attipoe has appealed to benevolent individuals and organizations to assist poor people to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
He expressed worry over the inability of some people to settle their medical bills causing a drain on the resources of the health facility
Madam Attipoe said these when children of King of Glory, an Early Childhood Development Centre in Koforidua, donated items worth 3,000 Ghana cedis to the Unit, to commemorate the 15th anniversary celebrations of the Centre.
She stressed that people who did not register with the scheme but attended the Hospital found it difficulty to settle their medical bills.
According to Madam Attipoe, the situation was so alarming that the Hospital at times detained mothers and their children until payment of their medical bills.
She also said the Department of Social Welfare intervened for the discharge of the defaulters who were made to settle the bills in instalment.
Madam Attipoe, however, said some defaulters absconded with their children, leaving their belongings behind.
Mr Alex Boakye-Yiadom, Director of the Centre said the donation demonstrated the Centre’s commitment to assisting children in distress situation.
Items donated included cartoons of milo and milk, cooking oil, bags of rice and sugar, toiletries and fruits.
