Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Gladson Awako has attributed his departure from the club to his rising influence and leadership.
Awako, who joined the Phobians in 2021, left in September 2023 after securing one FA Cup trophy during his time with the team.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, the 33-year-old revealed that internal politics within Hearts of Oak played a key role in his exit.
"Hearts of Oak and Olympics are two different clubs. One is political, and the other is not. At a point, they felt I was becoming too influential, so they decided to let me go, though I had no personal issues with anyone," he stated.
Awako also noted that the leadership responsibilities entrusted to him by former coach Slavko Matić contributed to his growing influence at the club.
"The leadership roles assigned to me by the coach gave me authority, and they believed allowing me to continue in those roles would not benefit some individuals within the club. So, they opted to part ways with me," he explained.
Following his departure, Awako rejoined Accra Great Olympics, now competing in the Division One League after their relegation.
