Ghana Premier League club Hearts of Oak have announced the passing of a fan, William Nii Laryea, during their 2024 Homowo Cup clash against Heart of Lions on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The club did not provide details about the cause of Laryea's death. However, reports suggest he collapsed after Heart of Lions took the lead, was rushed to the hospital, and was later confirmed dead.
Hearts of Oak eventually equalized and defeated Lions 8-7 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regular time.
The club in a statement on Monday said, “The management of Accra Hearts of Oak with a heavy heart wishes to express our sincere condolences to the family of William Nii Laryea, who met his untimely death yesterday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“The unfortunate incident occurred during our game against Kpando Heart of Lions in the 2024 Homowo Peace Charity Cup Match. Nii Laryea was a very passionate fan of the club who made time to watch all of our games, either home or away matches.
“His departure to eternity will not only affect his immediate family but also, we as a club since we would lose his unflinching support and the passion with which he followed the club.
“We hope to liaise closely with his family to ensure that we would contribute positively towards a successful final funeral rite of William Nii Laryea.
“Once again, and with a heavy heart, we express our condolences to his family and hope the Almighty God will continue to guide and protect them in these difficult times.
“May the Almighty grant him a lasting resting place.”
