Programmes Manager of Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mary Addah has called on the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu to heed to calls for his resignation by Ghanaians for another person to take over his position.
“The people of Ghana, have made a call, and they believe it is the right one, and we believe that the Minister should as a matter of urgency, consider these calls, and lay down his boots and allow somebody who would respect the laws of Ghana, to take his place, “ she said.
She further called on President Akufo-Addo to terminate the appointment of the Minister, should he fail to resign willingly.
Her comment comes in the wake of Ghanaians mounting pressure on Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, to resign. This followed revelations in the report of the Parliamentary Committee that probed the Sputnik V vaccine contract, that the Health Minister breached procurement and constitutional regulations.
Speaking on Joy FMs Top Story on Tuesday, Madam Addah stated that the Health Minister has chaired the Public Accounts Committee in the past and demanded the highest level of accountability from public office holders, therefore, “it is only right that calls out there should be adhered to and should be respected.”
“Recounting from the arguments that have been made. It is only clear that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands,” she said.
She added, “when people are called to respond and answer to accountability, they are called on TV, they’re messed up and shamed, publicly, when these people who have shamed them publicly also, repeat the process, they should be called to account. We say so, because the issues raised are too messy.”
According to her, “if we allow a Minister to get away with it because he is a Minister. Then, when the lower person does same, then he would also get away with it."
She said the Health Minister’s steps taken to get money for unsupplied doses of Sputnik V vaccines refunded by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, does not send any positive signals to GII, because it’s his duty to request for a refund once the contract has been terminated.
“It does not mean anything to GII because in the normal scheme of things, when a contract is terminated, and it's not executed, that’s one of the things that would happen definitely for future relationships, the executer, and the person who is the beneficiary would definitely want to ensure that the terms of the contract are met. And if you're to read their letter, this is one of the terms, that if it is not done you will return our money, and the person is returning them. That's a normal thing to do.”
