Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan will begin his quest for full fitness this week as Sunderland count down to the start of the Premier League campaign.
Gyan alongside former Manchester United Wes Brown played no part in the club's pre-season friendly in Germany but manager Steve Bruce is hoping to have Gyan available for Wednesday's run out at Kilmarnock with 19 days before they kick off their Premier League campaign against Liverpool.
Bruce told the Echo: "My aim is to get them all on against Kilmarnock. I need to make sure that come Liverpool, all of them have got something under their belt and played some minutes on the pitch. Wes will probably play against Kilmarnock on Wednesday, as will Gyan and Westwood.
"The main aim for me is to have as many selection headaches as I can come Liverpool, which is in three weeks time."
