GWCL extends water rationing in Greater Accra

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced it will continue with water rationing in parts of the Greater Accra Region due to significant production gaps.

This decision comes in response to a major supply disruption caused by a burst pipe in Dodowa, which affects several communities in Accra.

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources Lydia Alhassan issued a directive for GWCL to deploy water tankers to the affected areas. She emphasized the urgent need for improved communication with consumers.

"The situation is unacceptable," Alhassan said. "We must respect our consumers by keeping them informed during incidents like this. National Security and NADMO will support these efforts to ensure communities receive the water they need."

Mrs Lydia Alhassan stated, “She emphasised the urgent need for improved communication with consumers. "The situation is unacceptable," Alhassan said. "We must respect our consumers by keeping them informed during incidents like this. National Security and NADMO will support these efforts to ensure communities receive the water they need."

Despite the ongoing repair efforts, GWCL’s Public Relations Officer told JoyNews that water rationing will continue. The company’s production capacity of 120 million gallons per day falls short of the 170 million gallons required to meet current demand, creating a daily shortfall of 50 million gallons.

The company explained that the rationing is necessary to manage the gap between supply and demand. "With the current capacity, we must implement a rationing program to distribute the available water more equitably," the spokesperson said. "Without rationing, some areas would receive no water at all, which would be unfair."

GWCL has urged customers to store water in advance to mitigate the effects of the rationing. "We encourage all customers to keep water in storage to help them during periods when tap water is not available, we need to do the rationing program to be fair to everybody with the metro policy,” he said
