The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong to remain at his post as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) until the Commission completes its investigation into the issues surrounding his termination.
GTEC's directive emphasised the need for clarity and due process in resolving the matter.
The Commission stated that it has not received any communication from the UCC Council contradicting the purported extension of Prof Boampong's term by two years.
This extension has been a point of contention, leading to the current directive for him to stay in office.
On August 1, the Governing Council of UCC terminated Prof Boampong's appointment. His initial four-year term, which began in June 2020, officially ended on July 31, 2024.
Despite a purported two-year extension of his term, a notice signed by the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council, Prof Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, declared the extension null and void.
In response to these developments, GTEC issued a statement on Friday, August 2, clarifying that it will communicate its final position once all issues are thoroughly addressed. The Commission's involvement underscores the importance of proper administrative procedures and oversight in handling such significant appointments.
“In the meantime, given the University had previously communicated the appointment of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice Chancellor for a further term of two (2) years to the Commission (GTEC), and there being no communication to the contrary from the Council of the University, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong is to remain at the post as Vice-Chancellor until the Commission has examined the issues arising and communicated its position," the statement said.
Meanwhile, GTEC also instructed the management of the University to provide all relevant documents about the renewal and purported termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment.
“Given the Commission’s mandate to ensure that the management of the University is not interrupted, you are hereby directed to furnish the Commission with all documents concerning the renewal and purported termination of the Vice Chancellor’s appointment as all correspondences, court processes and communique on the matter to the Commission by Friday, 9th August 2024," it concluded.
The University Teachers of Ghana, UCC branch had kicked against the VC's removal alleging the University Council chair acted unilatreally and must therefore withdraw he termination.
Some members of the University Council have also opposed the termination.
