Grundfos in partnership with Global Water Centre introduces the first-ever water Technology National Certificate 1 and 2 programs at the St Paul's School in Kukurantumi to train ambitious young students to become certified technicians to keep the country’s water systems running.

The new Commission for Technical and Vocational Training curriculum aims at improving skills and bridging the technical knowledge gaps in water service delivery in Ghana.

In all, some 20 students are undertaking the program at the St. Paul's School at Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to repair and maintain crucial infrastructure such as water treatment systems, water technology, and water pumps in rural areas as well as manage public and private water systems, to provide more reliable access to clean water for communities across the country.

The curriculum is implemented in partnership with CTVET, TVET, UNICEF, and GLOBAL WATER CENTRE, among others, with funding from the Grundfos Foundation.

A Key Account Manager at Grundfos, Mr Clement Nartey Tettey, expressed that, " alongside our esteemed partners at the Global Water Centre, Grundfos stands poised to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming lives in Ghana. Our goal is to ensure clean water access for one million Ghanaians by 2025, in line with the UN sustainable development goals."

He also mentioned that the journey began with a vision to bridge technical knowledge gaps in water service delivery through dedicated collaboration, "we've achieved a remarkable feat, the development and acceptance of a pioneering CTVET water curriculum by the Ghanaian government."

Mr Tettey further urged the students to take full advantage of the programme to develop themselves since this will position them to take advantage of the numerous opportunities this skill and knowledge will offer them in the water sector not only in Ghana but across Africa.

The Chief Executive for the Global Water Centre, Mr Thomas Johnson, expressed that water is so much more than an essential commodity that needs to be sourced but the fulcrum, the breaking point the hinge of all life on this point.

He pointed out that, it is a vital source for agriculture, the production of food, securing the social fabric of the commodity and a vital source for economic development, how it is shared, protected and delivered will speak greatly to the culture of a community and the country.

On his part, the Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Norring commended the government's interest in technical and vocational training in the country, as it has the potential to reduce the issues of growing unemployment rates among the teeming youths.

Mr Norring further stated that the Danish government will keep working hand in hand with the government of Ghana to enhance the collaboration between the two countries which has existed over the last three decades.

The Director General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational and Training, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, says we as a country didn't focus on training for the younger generation, which has had adverse effects on the country thereby leading to the unemployment rate, however with the current situation the impact would be felt in the next fifteen years which will turn to curb the situation of unemployment, especially amongst pre-tertiary students.
