The Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO) has been named a finalist for the prestigious 2024 Earthshot Prize, marking a significant achievement for the youth-led organisation.
Known for its innovative “zero waste model,” GAYO drives behavioural change in waste management practices across Africa, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and particle pollution.

Their efforts have not only promoted environmental sustainability but have also brought additional income to communities.
GAYO’s nomination for the Earthshot Prize’s "Clean Our Air" category comes as part of a global recognition of 15 finalists selected from nearly 2,500 nominations spanning 139 countries.

If awarded the £1 million prize, GAYO plans to scale their initiative, with hopes of reducing air pollution by 70%, positioning them as a leading waste management model across the continent.
The Earthshot Prize, founded by Prince William, is aimed at spotlighting groundbreaking solutions to pressing environmental challenges, and GAYO’s innovative work in air quality and waste management places them at the forefront of Africa’s environmental revolution.
The Earthshot Prize celebrates transformative projects across five key areas: building a waste-free world, cleaning the air, reviving oceans, protecting and restoring nature, and fixing the climate.

"Being named as a finalist for the Earthshot Prize is a tremendous honour," said Desmond Alugnoa, Co-founder of GAYO.
"It validates the dedication of our team, our partners, and the resilience of the communities we work with. Our efforts to eliminate waste burning, amplify the work of waste pickers, and divert waste from landfills are truly making a difference."

The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony, set to take place in Cape Town this November, will bring together leading environmental innovators, investors, and philanthropists to celebrate and accelerate the work of this year’s finalists.
GAYO’s recognition serves as a powerful reminder of the impact grassroots efforts can have in safeguarding the planet and improving the lives of vulnerable communities affected by climate change.

As anticipation builds towards the awards ceremony, the organization’s journey continues to inspire hope for a more sustainable future.
