Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA), has donated 900 crates of eggs to the Office of the First Lady and Gender Ministry in support of the fight against Covid-19 pandemic in Ghana.
As part of the gesture, the Rebecca Foundation, received 400 crates of eggs out of the 900 for its ‘Relief Boxes Challenge’ initiative meant to support the vulnerable in society.
The Rebecca Foundation launched a ‘Relief Boxes Challenge’ on April 2 to support national efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Ghana.
It has since supported vulnerable women and identifiable groups including Kayayei (female head porters), the aged, the destitute and single mothers who are adversely impacted by the pandemic.
Receiving the items on behalf of the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo and the Rebecca Foundation, spokesperson, Sheela Sakyi Oppong, expressed appreciation to the Association for the donation.
She also thanked them for the thoughtfulness to support the Rebecca Foundation’s ‘Relief Boxes Challenge’ designed to assist the most vulnerable in society.
“The concern shown by GAPFA to assist vulnerable people through the Rebecca Foundation, will go a long way to cause the needed impact that we seek to achieve.
“Eggs are high in protein and other vital nutrients which is why the less privileged would appreciate this gesture,” she said.
The Association also donated 500 crates of eggs to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to distribute to all orphanages in the country under the ministry’s supervision.
The donation was made to the sector Minister, Cynthia Morrison at the Osu Children’s Home in Accra during a symbolic donation of items by the National COVID-19 Trust Fund to all orphanages under the ministry.
The Minister thanked the Association for the items and said it would be used for its intended purpose to benefit all orphanages which fall under her Ministry.
“This gesture is very dear to us and all child-oriented agencies under the ministry. We are grateful for the donation and we ask that the Association brings more of such in the future to support other initiatives,” she said.
Michael Nyarko Ampem, president of GAPFA said they were delighted to happy to have had the opportunity to reach out to the vulnerable in society during this Covid-19 period.
“Management of GAPFA discussed and decided that we would give what we have as part of measures to also contribute to the call from the First Lady’s Office through the ‘Relief Boxes Challenge’ as well as the Gender Ministry.
"We are happy to positively impact the lives of many underprivileged children in orphanages across the country,” he said.
Mr Ampem said the Association would always be excited to be part of the national intervention programmes that seeks to alleviate hardship among Ghanaians.
Other officials of the Association who were present during the donations were Seth A. Wilson, Chairman of GAPFA and Charles Boateng, Chief Executive of GAPFA.
