The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is set to form a strategic collaboration with traditional authorities to enhance tax education in the country.
The initiative is aimed at getting the traditional authorities to have a better understanding of the tax laws in order to influence the indigenes to comply.
This is part of moves by the GRA to boost revenue mobilisation through tax payments.
Speaking in an interview with Joy Business, Technical Adviser at the office of the Commissioner General of the GRA, Dominic Nab called on citizens to take advantage of the extended tax amnesty period to file their taxes to avoid prosecution.
When asked about strategies to meet its revenue target and ensure revenue for the state, Dominic Nab hinted “we will deepen the tax net and ensure that we expand it as we have always being doing. This time we may have to collaborate with traditional rulers to enhance tax education in the country.”
“We believe that as traditional rulers, they have certain authority over their people and can influence compliance for us” he said.
The country’s tax collection to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the lowest on the African continent.
Mr. Nab expressed optimism that the story will be different in the coming months due to the many measures it is putting in place including the activation of its Tax Court system which will prosecute tax offenders.
