Nana Yaw Manu, National Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union has admonished members to maintain high professional standards and avoid being appendages to criminal activities in the pursuit of their trade. He cautioned that in an era of rising ambushing and snatching of commercial vehicles, drivers ought to be extra vigilant and report suspicious characters to the law enforcement agencies or remain victims of circumstances. Nana Manu was speaking at the Volta Regional Delegates Conference of the union, where a four-member Executive Council chaired by Mr. Moses Davor were retained in an elections supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC). He urged members to eschew indiscipline, overloading, drunkenness, wrong overtaking and parking, speed driving, driving with defective lights and obey road signs and general driving regulations. Nana Manu cautioned drivers of 207 Mercedes Benz Buses to avoid filling their petrol tanks to the brim as by the design of the buses, the petrol could leak onto the rear right tyre and result in frequent tyre bursts and subsequent accidents. He urged them to always honour their insurance and income tax obligations to move the industry and the economy forward. Steven Okudzeto, General Secretary of GPRTU, appealed to members to curtail unwarranted internal bickering and fighting in order not to jeopardize the gains of the union. He said government economic policy of free trade market concept had engendered competition and the emergence of other transport unions into the transportation industry and urged members to work harder to stay in business. Mr. Davor thanked the delegates for the trust imposed in him to serve for another four-year term and craved the indulgences of the 104 branches in the region towards the completion of the 160,000 Ghana cedis hotel project under construction.
