GPL: Four games to lookout for on matchday 28

It’s a derby weekend and not just any derby weekend but a crucial one.

Results from these rivalries could have massive ramifications on the Ghana Premier League table.

Hearts of Oak are top heading into the weekend as Asante Kotoko, who are two points behind, lead the chasing pack.

There will be five derbies in the league this weekend; Ga Mantse derby, Ashanti derby, Bono derby, Nzema derby and Accra New boys derby.

Here are four of them you can’t afford to miss this weekend.

Hearts of Oak vs Great Olympics

The Ga Mantse derby.

Arguably the fiercest derby in the league.

Their long standing history makes this game one to watch.

Hearts of Oak have dominated this fixture for years.

However, in the reverse fixture, Olympics beat Hearts for the first time in 17 years.

A result that laid the foundation for what has been an incredible season so far for the Oly Dade.

Olympics have spent a considerable amount of time in the top four and were top of the table for a short while.

Hearts lead now and they’re bent on not surrendering their position.

A place at the top and revenge on Olympics is what Samuel Boadu’s men are after.

The Phobians are the team in form, winning their last five league games without conceding.

Stadium: Accra Sports stadium, Accra

Time: Sunday, 18:00GMT

Prediction: Hearts of Oak 2-1 Great Olympics

Asante Kotoko vs AshantiGold

Both sides could not be separated when they met in the first round five months ago.

Circumstances have changed and both teams are in dire need of the three points this weekend.

For Kotoko, they can’t afford anymore slip ups as Hearts of Oak don’t look like dropping points.

For AshantiGold, they’re just five points above the relegation zone and a poor run of form could see them involved in battle to avoid the drop.

Kotoko were very dominant against AshantiGold in the first round and failed to take their chances.

The Porcupines will be hoping for better conversion this time round.

They come into this game having progressed into the round of 32 stage of the MTN FA Cup.

There was a bit of disruption during the week as the club terminated the contract of Brazilian striker Michael Vinicius.

However, that will not keep Mariano Barreto’s players from going all out on a pitch AshantiGold are very accustomed to.

Stadium: Len Clay stadium, Accra

Time: Sunday, 15:00GMT

Prediction: Asante Kotoko 1-1 AshantiGold

Techiman Eleven Wonders vs Bechem United

On the other side of the league table is the Bono Derby.

Separated by just four points, Eleven Wonders welcome Bechem United to familiar territory.

Eleven Wonders are sinking, and sinking pretty fast as they are just one point above the relegation zone.

A crucial last minute win against fellow relegation rivals, King Faisal, will provide the confidence Wonders needed for this game.

They face a Bechem United side winless in their last five games and desperate for form.

The Hunters are just five points above the drop and losing this six-pointer could be very damaging to their Premier League status.

Stadium: Ohene Ameyaw park, Techiman

Time: Sunday, 15:00GMT

Prediction: Eleven Wonders 2-0 Bechem United

Legon Cities vs Inter Allies

They both share the stadium and are relatively newbies in the Accra terrain.

On Sunday, a place in the Premier League next season could prove to be at stake when Legon Cities welcome Inter Allies.

On paper, it is the best possible time for the two teams to meet because of their good form.

Legon Cities have won four out of their last five games to move into the top half of the table.

Victory for the Royals will be a big step to securing their place in the league and even challenging for a potential top six finish.

Inter Allies on the other hand have very little room for error.

Currently three points from safety, the Eleven is to One boys know time is running out and would relish all three points on Sunday.

Inter Allies were humiliated by Tema Youth in their midweek FA cup tie and would want to bounce back strong.

Legon Cities will be without their key man Jonah Attuquaye who’s on international duty with the Black Meteors.

Richmond Antwi showed he could step up in his place when he fired a brace in the FA Cup against Uncle T and he will be in contention to start against Inter Allies.

Stadium: Accra Sports stadium, Accra

Time: Monday, 18:00GMT

Prediction: Legon Cities 2-3 Inter Allies
