Cabinet has decided to maintain subsidies on liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) so that the product can continue to be affordable to the public.
However, it decided to ensure the strict enforcement of the Legislative Instrument (LI) 1592, Road Traffic Regulations 1994, which states inter alia that "all vehicles using gas must be properly registered with the appropriate authority; vehicles must have approved stickers; stickers must be reviewed every six months."
At the end of a crucial meeting summoned by President John Evans Atta Mills in Accra yesterday, the Cabinet said shops that converted petrol vehicles into gas must also have the authority to do so since those who flouted the law would be dealt with.
The Cabinet meeting was intended to find lasting solutions to the LPG shortage the country was encountering after a special team set up by the government to examine the gas delivery system, submitted its report to the President last week.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that gas supply challenges result from a substantial increase in the usage of the product by individuals and drivers.
