Minister of Trade and Industry Haruna Iddrisu says government will soon launch a national policy on corporate social responsibility in the mining sector.
According to him, the policy will define the parameters by which the mining and other corporate entities will operate to improve the livelihoods of people within its catchment area.
The Minister said this when a delegation from the Ghana Chamber of Mines paid a courtesy call on him in Accra.
Mr Iddrisu assured he is eager to deepen the ministry’s relationship with the Chamber of Mines, noting that his doors are open for dialogue in finding ways to address some of the challenges in the industry.
Government will review the public procurement act to give some significance to local companies and create an enabling environment for the private-public sector to ensure national development, he said.
Mr Iddrisu stated that the mining sector has contributed immensely to the development of the country in areas of foreign exchange and employment, averring that government will continue to support the sector to ensure its growth.
Dr Toni Aubynn, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, congratulated Mr Iddrisu on his assumption of office as the sector Minister, and expressed the willingness of the sector to work closely with the government for development.
He said there has been excessive focus on revenue for the mining sector and advocated for its integration into the entire economy since mining serves as a catalyst for national development.
Dr Aubynn assured the Minister that the Chamber of Mines was ever willing to support the collaboration for the benefit of all.
