Mr. Fred Avornyo, President of the 1991/93 (O and A Level) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) 1993 year batch of the Bishop Herman College (BIHECO) in Kpando in the Volta Region, has called on the government to involve old student groups in decision making on developments in schools.
Mr Avornyo made the call at the 67th Speech and Prize Giving Day of Bishop Herman Old Boys Union (BHOBU) Homecoming held at the school’s assembly hall on the theme: "Discipline, Hard work and Creativity- Keys to Academic Excellence" and sponsored by BHOBU 93.
“We are investing so much in the College and we should not in any way be sidelined in taking decisions that affect the success or otherwise of the College. It has been the tradition that government works with the Old Boys, the church and the traditional council in running the affairs of schools such as ours," he said.
Mr Avornyo asked the government to implement reforms judiciously to improve teaching and learning.
He also urged staff of the College to remain committed to producing best students to continue the legacy of the College.
Mr Mathias Attimah, Headmaster of the College, said the excellent academic performance and high level of discipline among students were reasons many parents wanted their wards to be enrolled in the College and commended the staff for their hard work.
He said despite the successes, the College lacked furniture and computers for the ICT laboratory among others.
Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister in a statement read on his behalf by Mr. Edmund Kudjoh Atta, North Dayi District Chief Executive, said education was the best investment young people could receive, adding that “considering the gap in the educational opportunities available to girls and considering long history of neglect of women and girls, I regard the education of a girl an urgent priority”.
He also said education was the only window of opportunity in addressing effectively challenges facing young people and capable of breaking fundamental processes that kept women in a vicious cycle of vulnerability, gender discrimination and impoverishment.
Madam Della Sowah, Member of Parliament for Kpando Constituency, tasked the old students to put in place mentorship programmes to build confidence in the students.
Mr Francis Dela Ofori, President of the 1992/94 O\A and SSS 94-year group on behalf of the group and sponsors of next year’s event presented 100 sets of a three in one student metal beds worth GHȼ50,000.00 and 500 mono desks to the College.
The 1994/96 group and the school’s PTA also donated sets of books and 150 mono desks to the College respectively.
The annual event is organized to acknowledge deserving and hardworking staff and students and sponsored by year groups with some staff and students receiving awards and cash prizes from the sponsors.
It was attended by religious and traditional leaders, old students of various year groups, parents and guardians, teachers and some old students of OLA Girls Senior High School in Ho.
