The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed that the government intends to introduce a Bank of Ghana (BoG) recapitalisation levy for Ghanaians to pay.
According to him, this is to prevent the central bank from collapsing due to its recent losses.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson made this known during the NDC’s ‘Moment of Truth’ address on Tuesday, August 8 at the party’s headquarters.
“The IMF has made offers to assist the Government to develop a plan for the recapitalization of the Central Bank.
That is why paragraph 18 of Ghana’s Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policy (MEFP) sent to IMF stated this fact.”
“Let me assure you that very soon, Ghanaians will be made to pay for Bank of Ghana recapitalization levy, a tax to recapitalise the Bank of Ghana, because the central bank has collapsed virtually,” the Minority Leader claimed.
The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam legislator thus lashed out at the Governor of BoG for spending $250 million on building a new head office while the apex bank struggles to stay afloat.
“Perhaps the more troubling fact is that having brought the Bank of Ghana to this terrible financial state, the Governor and his deputies have found it prudent and expedient to invest $250 million (¢2.8 billion) on another Head Office building somewhere at Ridge. In our circumstances, this is the height of insensitivity in the management of the finances of a troubled country.”
Meanwhile, the NDC MPs have called for the immediate resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison and his deputies.
“We call for the immediate resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today,” the Minority Leader demanded.
Following this, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the party will not renege in its quest to ensure this is achieved.
Sammy Gyamfi said the party has a detailed plan to achieve their objective.
Speaking in an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, August 8, he said they will build forces together to bring sufficient pressure on “these wreckers.”
“After 21 days, if the Governor of the BoG does not resign, all the 137 Members of Parliament (MPs) of the NDC, together with all progressive forces, our allies, well-meaning Ghanaians, all patriots who are tired of the recklessness of this nation-wrecking Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government will be marching in accordance with the Public Order Act to the precinct of the BoG.”
“And we will be occupying the BoG together with the media to bring to bear sufficient pressure on these wreckers. Until they resign, they will have no peace of mind,” he stated.
