Government has been urged to give women more leadership positions to enable them to contribute to resolving issues affecting them.
Ms Elizabeth Adongo, a gender officer of the Talensi-Nabdam District in the Upper East Region, who stated this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday at Tongo, said by so doing they would be contributing their quota to national development.
She explained that it was not all issues affecting women that men could address and that women themselves were needed to tackle them.
Ms Adongo said women when given the opportunity could perform creditably like their male counterparts and urged men in positions not to intimidate women but rather encourage them to take leadership positions.
She re-acted to the recent remarks made by one of the panellist on a GTV Breakfast Show that Ms Agnes Chigabatia was not a suitable candidate to be the running mate of the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ms Adongo described the attitude of the panellist as unfortunate and said it did not take one to attain higher education to hold political leadership, saying it was a calculated attempt to intimidate and ridicule women in general.
The gender officer said Mrs Agnes Chigabatia had held several positions in government and had a hard won reputation including several international awards and wondered how such insinuation could be cast on her.
Ms Adongo cited the late Madam Hawa Yakubu, who performed tremendously and excelled even more than men throughout her political carrier.
This, she noted, demonstrated that when given equal chance women could help contribute effectively to national development
