The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has unveiled an ambitious government initiative to repurpose a considerable number of traditional fuel stations into electric vehicle (EV) charging centres.
This initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at accelerating Ghana’s transition towards clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Speaking at an energy policy forum on Wednesday, 19th March, Mr Jinapor emphasised the need for Ghana to prepare for the inevitable shift towards electric mobility.
He noted that as global trends move towards sustainable transport, the country must establish the necessary infrastructure to support the widespread adoption of EVs.
He highlighted the anticipated influx of electric vehicles onto Ghanaian roads in the coming years, projecting a significant transformation in the transport sector within the next decade.
According to him, the government is taking proactive steps to ensure that the country is not left behind in the global clean energy revolution.
Mr Jinapor also pointed to advancements in EV technology, particularly improvements in charging efficiency, as a key factor in making the transition viable.
“What we are going to do is convert most of our filling stations by allocating space for charging stations. Today, with technological advancements, you can fully charge your car in just five to ten minutes and continue your journey,” he stated.
He further revealed plans to collaborate with BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, to introduce cutting-edge charging technology in Ghana.
“We are also going to deploy BYD, the Chinese company, to bring in new technology. With this innovation, in just five minutes, your car will be fully charged,” he added.
