Government has called for the support of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana, (ICAG) to enhance the course of sustainability reporting in various educational institutions.
The move is expected to boost the promotion of Environmental Social Governance reporting among the youth before entering the job market.
Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum made the disclosure after addressing the ICAG sustainability stakeholder’s forum in Accra.
The partnership proposed is expected to create a platform for both government and ICAG to develop strategies to promote sustainable reporting in both business operations and the schools.
The ICAG has been playing a pioneering role in getting members to report on Environmental and Social Governance as part of the accounting practice aimed at ensuring that Ghanaian firms meet the international standards under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr. Adutwum said there is room for collaboration to enhance sustainability.
“Most critical is to work with them so they could support us so students at the secondary and tertiary level who can charter with this course can be coached.
We have high school students who can go through the process but most of them may not know so we have to partner them to help with the curriculum process so that we get these students early. We therefore commend the ICAG for a good job on this dialogue because it has opened our eyes and me personally I have learnt something from here” he said.
The President of the ICAG Sena Darke explained that the forum is important to members as more people have begun initiatives to improve sustainability reporting.
The stakeholders also formed a National Committee to be chaired by Partner at KPMG Ghana, Andy Akoto with the mandate to spearhead the reporting of sustainability in various financial accounts.
