Former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey has slammed previous and existing government of failed promise to have nation's boxing hub Bukom upgraded with infrastructure to develop the sport at grass root.
President Mahama on his routine tour of the region in October promised the town of Bukom a modern gym to help develop the sport and the plan was reechoed by Sports minister Mahama Ayariga weeks ago that government was on course to deliver on the promise , but Joshua Clottey exclusively told JOY sports, President Mahama's promise is as empty as any.
"Yeah it's a fake promise, trust me, because Ex-President Kuffour promised that but he never did anything and left, the new government is with President Mahama and the same pertains, that's what they do they promise but at the end of their tenure they don't construct any gymnasium ,we have a lot of football stadia but no just a single Boxing Gymnasium we have been waiting for years and it's still not coming" Clottey explained in an interview with JOY Sports.
Ghana’s great boxers who have excelled internationally with numerous world titles have belts come from Bukom, but it yet to attract the needed attention from government ..There have been other concerns about where the Gym will be situated as the town itself looks cluttered.
Meanwhile Joshua Clottey has hinted he will not fight in a Brazilian opponent later this month which is contrary to reports super entertainment Boxing promotions have agreed to stage a fight to keep ahead of a proposed world title next years. Joshua Clottey has been inactive since his victory over Anthony Mudine last September and missed an opportunity to face Saul Alvarez Canelo because of injury to the latter.
