Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament's Education Committee, Dr Clement Abass Apaak, says government has not been fair to the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

This follows government's inability to settle its debts owed to the exam council which has resulted in the delay of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

Although the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum announced that the results will be released by December 29, WAEC has cast doubt on the Council's ability to meet the December 29 deadline for releasing the results.

Mr Apaak called out government for attempting to shift the blame to WAEC.

“Government has not been fair to the West African Examination Council (WAEC). Government is trying to paint the picture as though the challenge with the delay of the WASSCE results originated from WAEC, when in fact it is government's own inability to meet its obligations, to WAEC that caused the current problem,” he explained.

In an interview on Joy FM Newsnight on Thursday, December 26, the implication of the delay in results is very dire and should be of concern to every Ghanaian.

The delay in publishing the exam results has severe implications for students, parents, and tertiary institutions, he added.

Students are unable to apply for or take up their places in tertiary institutions, while institutions are unable to determine student eligibility.

The Builsa South MP urged the public to hold the government accountable for their actions.

"We shouldn't be cutting them any slack or giving them a pass. They are in government, and they have been collecting our taxes over the last eight years.

"They have been taking loans on our behalf, and they are obligated to meet their responsibilities as far as the people of Ghana and indeed our students and our educational system are concerned,” he said.
