Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Global Media Foundation, Raphael Godlove Ahenu, has challenged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to use his last year in office to redeem his political image by fixing the economy.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo should focus on implementing pragmatic measures to alleviate the hardship of Ghanaians if he wants his name to be in the good books of the country.
"Your government must step up to address the numerous economic challenges and social difficulties that have burdened our citizens because of poor governance by your administration," Mr Ahenu stressed in a New Year message.
He said the Akufo-Addo-led government must take several concrete measures to reduce the economic hardship and improve the well-being of its citizens.
He listed the strengthening of social safety nets such as cash transfer programmes, food assistance and healthcare subsidies as programmes targeted at providing relief for the vulnerable population and reducing poverty.
Mr. Ahenu suggested that providing support to the agricultural sector through access to modern farming techniques, inputs, and markets can enhance food security and livelihoods in rural communities.
Mr Ahenu also said investing in renewable energy projects can help reduce energy costs, improve access to electricity, and mitigate the impact of climate change whilst creating employment opportunities in the green economy.
On education reforms, he pointed out that focusing on technical and vocational education and enhancing educational infrastructure can equip citizens with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in the workforce and contribute to economic development.
He further recommended expanding access to affordable healthcare services to improve the overall health and well-being of the population and reduce the financial burden of healthcare expenses.
‘‘Good Governance and Anti-Corruption Efforts, strengthening institutions, promoting transparency, and combating corruption can ensure that resources are efficiently and equitably used, benefiting the entire population,’’ Me Ahenu said.
On Investment in Infrastructure, the government, he said, can enhance access to markets, services, and employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas, through massive investment in infrastructure such as roads, public transportation, and utilities.
According to the Anti-Corruption crusader, ‘‘implementing these and other targeted measures, the government should make significant strides in reducing hardship and fostering sustainable development for the benefit of all its citizens’’.
"In the spirit of hope and progress, let us work together to create a brighter future for all Ghanaians by implementing effective policies to reduce poverty, improve access to education and healthcare, and stimulate economic growth so we can build a more prosperous and equitable society in 2024,'' Mr Ahenu stated.
He called for a renewed commitment towards the well-being of the country and its ordinary people.
‘‘Together, we can overcome the obstacles that stand in our way and create a better, more vibrant Ghana for generations to come,’’ he reiterated.
