Government has been asked to let the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cover the cost of antiretroviral drugs and to make Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) for HIV/AIDS free.
These would encourage many people to check their HIV status towards the prevention of the spread of the disease.
The call was made by participants of a five-day in-service training on HIV/AIDS, organized by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for selected teachers from the Volta Region.
The event was sponsored by the World Health Organization and Education International.
It was aimed at building the capacity of participants to enable them to effectively educate school children on HIV/AIDS.
The teachers observed that the cost of the drugs and 50 Ghana pesewas being charged for testing one's HIV status were deterring many people from knowing their status.
Participants said even though reports indicated that the country's HIV/AIDS prevalence rate was decreasing, there was the need to intensify efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.
They called for more awareness creation and behavioural change to address the situation.
The teachers also appealed to the Ghana Education Service to provide schools especially basic schools with permanent trained guidance and counseling teachers to keep the HIV/AIDS campaign alive.
Ms Helena Awurasa, Coordinator of the training, said HIV/AIDS affected education and called for the training of teachers in HIV prevention methods.
