The Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing team of Ghana recorded a victory over their UK-based opponents from Team Haringey at the weekend.
Ghana won seven out of the 11 fights in the two-day tournament making it the team’s first win in three tournaments between the two teams.
Most impressive in the Ghanaian team were the likes of lightweight Nurudeen Mohammed and bantamweight Emmanuel Quartey.
David Cinko, a welterweight from Haringey displayed excellent skill against Ghana’s Tahiru Atobila to emerge the tournament’s best boxer.
Haringey’s Light heavyweight boxer Kinsley Ikeke has taken part in all three tournaments and said the experience has been great.
He said the environment was fantastic, because “we come from a very cold climate and now we are boxing in a very highly hot climate and the crowd is very supportive.”
Team Haringey Coach, Bryan John said the Ghanaian boxers gave his team a tough test.
“We are not used to that level of aggression and strength in our country. The Ghanaian boxers are very, very tough and strong and very relentless in their approach to boxing.”
He said his boxers were warned about the potency of the Ghanaian boxers.
