The Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) Foundation is constructing a multipurpose Astroturf pitch in the Lawra Municipality of the Upper West Region.
The project is to be executed at the Lawra stadium and is intended to give a new face to sporting activities in the municipality, and at the same time improve upon the economic well-being of the people.
The duration of the project is 6 months and when completed it will be the first Astroturf pitch in the Upper West region.
The executive director of the GNPC, Dr Dominic Kwesi Eduah said the project is part of projects outlined to impact the lives of 10 million people in the country in the next 5 years.
In a brief remark before cutting the sod for the construction of the ultra-modern Astroturf pitch, Dr Eduah noted that youth infrastructure was in tandem with youth empowerment, and explained the importance of the project to the economic empowerment unit of the GNPC.
Dr Dominic Kwesi Eduah urged the people to give their maximum support and cooperation to the contractor to execute the job.
Paramount chief of the Lawra traditional area, Naa Puowelle Karbo III considers the construction of the multipurpose Astroturf pitch a dream come true after 40 years of it being abandoned.
Naa Puowelle Karbo called on the people of the area, especially the youth to take advantage of the project.
Deputy Roads Minister Anthony Abayifaa Karbo is hopeful that the completion of the project which will be the first of its kind in the Upper West region will help produce many sportsmen and women from the area to represent the country at the international stage.
Chief Executive Officer of Blag Ghana Limited, Eddie Donkor, whose company was awarded the contract assured the people of the area that he would deliver a good quality project on time that will stand the test of time.
