Meet Gloria Agyare, a dedicated environmentalist and advocate, who has made significant strides in empowering young people to address climate change and environmental challenges in Ghana. Her work is rooted in a deep-seated love for nature and a belief in the power of community-based solutions.
Agyare's journey into environmental activism was sparked by her concern over deforestation and the negative impacts of illegal logging in Ghana. Inspired by her Christian faith and the teachings of environmental leaders, she decided to dedicate her career to protecting the environment.
Through her work with Impact West Africa Fellowship, Agyare has strengthened her advocacy skills and engaged with key stakeholders at the national level. She has advocated for policies that address the root causes of Galamsey and promote sustainable livelihoods for young people.
The fellowship, organised by the Aspen Global Innovators Group and Niyel, is designed to support changemakers in West Africa who are committed to addressing the region's critical challenges.
Agyare's work in advocacy, especially in addressing environmental concerns like Galamsey (illegal mining in Ghana), aligns with the fellowship's mission of empowering leaders to engage with stakeholders and promote impactful policy changes at the national and regional levels.
When she served as a Programmes Officer for the Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM), Agyare focused on educating and engaging young people in climate-based solutions. She led numerous community-based projects aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and food security through sustainable food projects, climate change, and environmental degradation.
Tackling Galamsey: A Persistent Challenge
One of the most pressing environmental issues in Ghana is Galamsey, the illegal mining of minerals. This has recently become a national concern as water bodies are severely affected by the effects of Galamsey. Agyare is one of the environmentalists who have been actively involved in raising awareness about the devastating impacts of Galamsey on the environment and communities. She has worked to empower young people to resist the allure of Galamsey and explore sustainable alternatives.

Gloria Agyare's work has shed light on the detrimental effects of Galamsey, an illegal mining practice that has ravaged Ghana's environment and communities. Her efforts to raise awareness and explore sustainable alternatives have been instrumental in addressing this pressing issue. Galamsey has caused widespread deforestation, water pollution, and soil degradation, while also contributing to human rights abuses and poverty. Agyare's advocacy has been crucial in highlighting the urgent need for action to combat this destructive practice.
Agyare's long-term goal is to drive Ghana towards a sustainable food system. She believes that by empowering young people to adopt sustainable agricultural practices, such as agroforestry and organic farming, Ghana can address environmental challenges and create a more resilient future.
A Call for Action
Agyare emphasizes the importance of political will and youth engagement in addressing environmental issues. She believes that by working together, “we can create a sustainable and equitable future for generations to come.”
Throughout her career, Agyare has demonstrated a deep commitment to empowering young people to become environmental leaders. She believes that youth have the energy, creativity, and passion necessary to drive positive change. By providing education, training, and mentorship, Agyare has enabled young people to participate in community-based projects, advocate for sustainable policies, and develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges. Her work has shown that investing in youth is essential for building a sustainable future.
Agyare's advocacy has extended beyond community-based initiatives to the national level. She has engaged with government officials, policymakers, and other stakeholders to advocate for sustainable policies that address environmental issues. By influencing policy, Agyare has helped to create a more enabling environment for environmental action and ensure that the needs of future generations are considered.
