Insurance company Glico with the assistance of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has developed a flexible pension plan to meet the needs of all traders in the association.
At a meeting in Accra to sensitize the public and leadership of the association about the scheme, the president of GUTA, George Kwaku Ofori called on government to aid the organization in its quest since the end benefit is a growing economy that will generate more jobs through tax collection.
Old age like death is inevitable and will meet the person fortunate to still be alive. Unfortunately, this has become a scary possibility because of inadequate funds to support the aged at a time when they cannot work.
It is for this reason that pension schemes are operated across the globe to ensure retired workers can still afford the necessities of life. However many challenges have confronted such schemes with the pensioner often unsatisfied with the output of their long term contributions and the situation in Ghana is no different.
Efforts have been made over time to improve workers’ pension schemes to attain acceptable standards that will make life after work bearable and enjoyable.
Thus the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) introduced a scheme to rope-in the informal sector, which hitherto was excluded from the scheme.
However, at a meeting which brought together stakeholders and representatives from across the country, the Deputy General Secretary of Ghana Union of Traders Association, Alpha Abdullah Shaban said most of GUTA’s members are not attracted to the SSNIT pension scheme explaining that it is because the scheme does not meet most of the needs of the informal sector.
He said the organization rather found it necessary to join the government’s new pension scheme to attract the informal sector and urged other informal businesses to unite with GUTA.
A representative from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, K.N Atuahene assured the organization that the Ministry would protect it from foreigners doing business in the country who do not conform to tax laws.
