The Ghana Journalist Association has offered a 10 million cedi reward for anyone who will provide information leading to the arrest of those who murdered the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the association, Samuel Enin in Kumasi at the weekend. Unknown gunmen shot and killed Mr Ennin on Friday Night at a popular spot at Pankrono Estate in Kumasi. Mr Ennin, the Editor of the Ashh FM, a local radio station in Kumasi, was relaxing with some staff and friends of the radio station when he was shot. Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who were in an unregistered white saloon car, entered the spot and without any provocation shot the deceased in the stomach after firing indiscriminately to frighten customers. The assailants entered their vehicle and drove away. Mr Ennin was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he died, leaving behind a wife and two children. A statement signed by the President of the GJA, Ransford Tetteh and issued in Accra said, “The association, particularly its national executive is completely devastated by this barbaric act by wicked cowards and it will provide the police with information leading to their arrest”. It said that the GJA had received with deep consternation the shocking news of the killing over the weekend of Mr Enin. “We wish to appeal to the Police Administration to provide all the necessary support for the Ashanti Regional Police Command to carry out a massive manhunt for the culprits,” the statement said. “We kindly request members of the general public, especially lovers of free expression and democracy to lend their support to the police in their search for the murderers", it said. It recalled with grave concern the numerous attacks on journalists by individuals and institutions last year and gave the assurance that “no amount of attacks by individuals or organisations on journalists will intimidate the media in the performance if their duties and responsibilities to the society”. “The association also wishes to assure all its members and indeed all media personnel that it will explore all legitimate means to provide them with a conducive environment to practice their profession,”, it stressed. The statement also expressed the association’s condolence to Mr Enin’s family for his untimely death and for the painful loss of such a distinguished journalist and organiser who dutifully served the GJA. Mr Enin won the GJA award for the Best Environmental Reporter in 1998 while working with the Free Press in Accra. The GJA also requested all media houses to fly red flags at half mast for four days starting Tuesday in memory of Mr Enin. Meanwhile the Greater Accra Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), on Sunday condemned the murder Ennin and described it as a "cowardly act by intolerant elements of society." A statement signed by Mr Gideon Sackitey, the Chairman of the branch, said it was shocking that a journalist could be shot and killed in public and added "those who killed him should bow their heads in shame." The statement said whatever reason for which Mr Ennin was killed would not be quenched because the vision to flush out the truth, for which he stood, would not die. "We, as journalists, will fight on, bringing society up to do what is right for our country," it said.
