The Electoral Commission says to avoid delays in executing plans for elections, the country will have to seriously consider providing funding for the commission six months before election year. Responding to concerns over the EC’s decision to defer the opening of the voters register, Deputy Commissioner David Adenze Kanga says although funds have been provided this year’s elections the postponement could have been avoided. He said regardless of the absence equipment needed for reopening of the register preparations for the election could continue till the equipment arrive. “What we should know is that as of now we have a register in the country. We can use that register to take nominations for the elections and then the process of revision continue. There is no need for anybody to panic”, he empahsised. He also explained the issue of alleged bloated register in thirteen constituencies in the Ashanti Region which generated huge controversy. “I can say with certainty that the voters register is intact there is no problem with it. There is a problem with a table we tried to establish so that when political parties request for information from the register we just quickly draw it from that table. It appears the process of drawing that table had problems” he stated. Mr. Akanga said the commission will visit the data base centre and run the various areas to see if there are similar problems. Story by Malik Abass Daabu
