The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East constituency and the Vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Paul Apraku Twum Barimah, has appealed to the government to properly resource the Ghana Embassy in the United States of America.
This he believes will enable the staff to deliver quality service.
According to him, the embassy currently operates only four cars which is not enough to handle the pressure it encounters in the performance of its duties.
“The number of cars owned and managed by the Embassy must be increased to enable officials to contain the pressure and be able to deliver their services without obstacles”.
“The interesting part of this whole issue is that officials of Ministries, Municipal and District Assemblies depend on such facilities and the meagre resources of the Ghana Embassy in US when they travel”, he mentioned, adding “They expect the Embassy to fund their intercity travels and sometimes using their bank cards to book accommodation”.
“This needs to change”, he pointed out.
He stressed that officials of Ministers Municipal and District Assemblies should bear their own cost and not rely on the meagre resources of the Ghana Embassy in USA.
Formal diplomatic relations between Ghana and the United States of America date back to 1957, following Ghana's independence from Britain. Relations between the two countries have been cordial and bonds of friendship and cooperation continue to be strengthened, at the political and economic levels, in defence and security cooperation, health, education, and in law enforcement in respect of narcotics and drug control.
