The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says Ghanaians deserve to know whether the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson is credible following the 2020 election petition.
Sammy Gyamfi feels Ghanaians who joined long queues and risked their lives in the midst of Covid-19 to vote, are eligible to know if the EC Chairperson was valid with her declaration of the 2020 presidential election.
His comments come after, the legal representative of the Electoral Commission presented to the Court that it will not call any witness to adduce evidence to its case.
According to the EC's lead Counsel, Justice Amenuvor, the burden of proof in the petition hearing lies on the petitioner and therefore it will be wrong for the lead counsel for Mr Mahama to induce evidence from the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa.
But reacting to this, Mr Gyamfi told Samson Lardy Anyenini on Joy News’ Newsfile Saturday that Ghanaians need to know whether the EC boss conducted the 2020 presidential elections as required by law.
“Ghanaians who joined long queues at the risk of losing their lives amidst Covid-19 to register and vote, deserve to know whether the EC Chairperson we have in this country and we are paying is credible.
"They must know whether she has been candid about her job relative to the declaration of the 2020 presidential election, whether she is truthful and all that,” he stated.
The Communications Officer further added that it is only through cross-examination "that her [Jean Mensa] feet can be held to the fire of accountability and her credibility can be tested."
He then questioned why the EC boss is 'running away from cross examination adding that "if Afri-Gyan mounted the witness box in the 2013 election petition case and defended his work. Why is Jean Mensa running away if she has nothing to hide?"
