A Ghanaian woman has been selected to represent Ghana in this year's Commonwealth Women's Antarctic Expedition to ski over 800 kilometres across Antarctica to the Geographic South Pole.
A statement by Ms. Babara Yanny, Team Leader, said the expedition was to mark the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth and would demonstrate the potential of greater inter-cultural understanding and exchange.
She said a team of eight women from Commonwealth countries of Cyprus, Ghana, India, Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand, Jamaica and the United Kingdom, were expected to attend a preliminary training and selection camp in Norway, which comes off next Saturday.
Ms Yanney said her participation in the expedition would add up to the achievement of Ghanaian women and therefore called for support from corporate bodies and well meaning Ghanaians to enable her to raise 3,064 dollars to pay for her expenses to participate in the event.
She appealed to any benevolent person to contact her on ghana@commonwealthexpedition.com.
”Just having the chance to represent my country, will test my mental and physical abilities and push me far beyond anything I have ever done before.”
Ms. Yankey expressed the hope to embark on several school and public talks and lectures about gender issues, climate change and the work of the Commonwealth, when given the chance.
Sking to the South Pole at a temperature of -30 degrees Celsius has become a journey symbolising personal endeavour and achievement.
