Ghanaian wins UN writing competition

Miss Edem Doreen Akua Asimadu, a Ghanaian, has been named the overall winner of a competition dubbed, "Human Rights Day 2007” writing competition. The competition organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information in collaboration with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs had over 700 entries submitted by students from around the world. The competition was part of activities to mark Human Rights Day. A statement signed by Shashi Tharoor, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, said Ms. Asimadu's entry showed with great impact the relationship between poverty and violation of human rights through specifically highlighting one aspect of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She wrote on a topic: "Poverty is a Consequence of Human Rights Violations." As her prize, she was given a certificate signed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour together with a prize pack of human rights materials. Source: GNA
