General Henry Anyidoho of Ghana will head the UN mission temporarily in Sudan, until a permanent replacement is named.
This has become necessary because, the head of the peacekeeping force in Darfur Rodolphe Adada, a former foreign minister of Congo, has resigned.
Mr. Rodolphe Adada’s resignation takes effect from August 31, putting the prospects of an early resolution to the conflict in doubt.
General Henry Anyidoho, who has rich experience in peacekeeping, was retired from the
Ghana Army in 2001. He was Deputy Force Commander for the UN in Rwanda between 1994 and1996 during the Rwandan genocide.
UNAMID, created by a Security Council resolution in July 2007, is authorized to implement the 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement. The force formally began operations in December 2007, but quickly ran into trouble from a lack of military hardware, equipment and staff.
General Anyidoho is father of Communications Director at the Office of the President,
Koku Anyidoho.
