A member of Ghana’s 4x100m gold-winning quartet at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Benjamin Azamati grabbed two key awards in his first season with the West Texas A&M University, USA.
Since returning from the World Athletics Championship in Doha last September and outperforming everyone at the Ghana University Games in Sprints, Azamati gained admission to the West Texas University and within months has been adjudged Student Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
In the year under review the West Texas A&M track sensation, came first in the 60m dash in a time of 6.71s to help his school finish second at the 2020 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Lubbock, Texas.
Earlier in February, Azamati, in breathtaking style broke, the 60-meter dash school record for WT A&M in his first-ever career race for the University in a time of 6.69s and tied the University’s record to become the fourth West A&M athlete to win the 60-meter dash.
Benjamin Azamati beat Tobias Harris to win the Student Athlete of the Year award and had the most votes than any athlete in the entire competition with over 6000 votes in the three week period for voting.
For Azamati the urge to do more only got bigger, after picking his maiden awards within few months of joining the University.
“This award serves as a motivation and a great boost for me, as a freshman. I want to win more titles with WT, and myself also,” he said.
Benjamin Azameti also finished in the Top 5 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association DII 60m team.
