Super Sports presenter, Thomas Kwenaite, wants FIFA to ban Senegalese referee Ndiaye Maguette for awarding what he claims was a dubious penalty to Ghana in the 1-0 victory over South Africa in the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifier.
The ace South African football pundit is also calling on the World football governing body to replay the match with a more proficient referee.
Ghana scored the match's only goal from the penalty spot after Daniel Amartey was fouled in the box.
Captain Andre Ayew expertly dispatched goalkeeper Rowen Williams to slot the ball at the bottom corner for the winner, which qualified the host to the playoffs of the qualifiers.
Speaking to Luv Fm’s Delali Atiase after the match on Sunday, Thomas emphasised the need for fair play at all levels of the game.
“We in South Africa always adhere to the spirit of fair play. We are aware that in every football match, you win, lose or draw. Look, we don’t mind losing; we’ve lost to Ghana before in previous world cup qualifiers here at home.
"That squad was spearheaded by Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah, and we lost, and we accepted that Ghana was a better side. However, this time there’s a lot of indignation because a lot of people are shocked, upset, and find it difficult to understand o how it all came about,” he said.
The ace football analyst described the Senegalese referee Ndiaye Maguette as a disgrace to football and called for sanctions against the match official.
“The Senegalese referee Ndiaye Maguette is a shame to football, he actually should be investigated, and if found to be involved in match-fixing, I think he should be banned. We have nothing against Ghana; even at the World Cup 2010, we adopted Ghana and proclaimed them Bagana Bagana, but I don’t think the match is a true reflection of how South Africa played.
"We tend to get the feeling that Ghana were assisted in winning that game, and I’m grateful that the South African Football Association is not letting the matter go down and are challenging the decision of that referee,” he expressed.
Meanwhile, Thomas Kwenaite has asked the South African Football Association to pursue this matter to its logical end by ensuring that South Africa gets a replay of the match.
“I believe that SAFA should pursue this because it has happened before where South Africa beat Senegal in a world cup qualifier. Senegal felt aggrieved and lodged a protest with FIFA that the referee was biased and the penalty he awarded South Africa was unjustified.
"FIFA upheld Senegal’s protest, overturned the result of that match and ordered a reply of the game. I hope that FIFA will do the same in this instance because SAFA has a video recording of the match and some of the controversial decisions that were applied by the referee. And if they also feel like we do that the penalty was unjustified, hopefully, they might overturn that decision and order a replay,” he observed.
Ghana is one of six countries that have already booked a place in the CAF World Cup playoffs expected to be played in March next year.
