Ghana will host the 41st Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights (ACHPR) from May 16 to May 30, 2007 to deliberate on human rights issues.
An agreement to this effect was signed on Friday between the Government of Ghana and the Commission.
Joe Ghartey, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, signed on behalf of the government while Robert Eno, Officer In-Charge of the ACHPR Secretariat in Banjul, The Gambia, appended for the Commission.
Mr Eno lauded Ghana for accepting to host the conference, which, he said, will be a historic occasion for Ghana's 50 independence anniversary.
He said the Session will strengthen the Commission's collaboration with Ghana in safeguarding human rights issues in the continent.
Mr Eno said the Session will also mark the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Commission and called on Ghanaians to join in the celebrations.
Mr Ghartey said it was important that Ghana took stock on all issues, especially those bordering on human rights, after 50 years of attaining independence to ensure total freedom.
He said Ghana had enacted numerous laws and ratified various conventions, including the International Convention on Children's Rights, aimed at safeguarding the fundamental human rights of all people.
The Attorney-General said the 1992 Constitution also guaranteed the various forms of human rights as well as responsibility of citizens.
Mr Ghartey said government was committed to ensuring total freedom through the recognition and protection of the rights of its citizens to make Ghana's independence meaningful and real.
