All is set for the 2014/15 Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) final as defending champions, Cosmos Buffaloes RFC come up against their Accra rival Idas Sports RFC on March 21, 2015.

At the semi-final round of league matches of the ongoing Ghana Rugby Club Championship, the top two teams from Pool A of Greater Accra and Pool B of Central and Western Region, came face to face to battle out a spot for the final game at last Saturday March 14, 2015, at the Schools and Colleges Park in Cape Coast.

The first game of the day was between top seed of Pool A, Cosmos Buffaloes and second seed of Pool B, UCC Spartans.

The game kicked off with both teams treading cautiously until about 10 minutes when Cosmos Buffaloes penetrated the opponent’s defence and scored the first try of the day. From then onwards the Buffaloes took control of the game. The first half ended in favour of the Buffaloes, scoring 7 tries and 3 conversions.

The second half saw some resistance from the home team but as it was in the first half, the away team found a way around their defence once again, scoring 11 tries and making 4 conversions. The game ended 106 points to 0 in favour of Cosmos Buffaloes.

Speaking to the coach of Cosmos Buffaloes about his impression of the game, he reiterated his team’s philosophy that regardless of who they (Cosmos Buffaloes) play, they bring it on.

“We respect every team we play and as such, it will be disrespectful if we don't go all out.” He further stated, “Rugby has come a long way in this country and clearly the new administration via the leadership of Herbert Mensah has indeed brought prestige to this gentleman's game that is called Rugby”.

The second and final game of the day was between second place team of Pool A, Idas Sports and first placed team of Pool B, Westside Boys. This game proved tougher than the previous encounter. The Westside Boys clearly showed they were the champions of CentWest when they held Idas for the longest while during the first half. Idas showed experience and maturity by finding the weakness in the defence of the Westside boys and they started scoring tries. They scored 5 late tries in the first half.

The second half continued with Idas scoring 3 more tries to seal their victory. They won the game by 50 points to 0.

Abdul Samad, the coach of the winning side, said they had a very tough time playing the Westside Boys and they did not have it easy at any point in the game.

“The Westside Boys gave us a run for our money today and their performance make me happy because it’s quite clear Ghana Rugby has a huge future”. He praised the President of Ghana Rugby, Mr. Herbert Mensah for organising arguably the best Rugby league so far in the history of this country, assuring that his team will win the first league trophy under his leadership.

Mr. Steve Noi, the tournament Commissioner was highly elated by the general preference of the teams and also the general turnout of the tournament. “Clearly anyone who has been with Rugby before this new administration took over can see a tremendous improvement in this year’s Ghana Rugby Club Championship and I am certain that next year will even be bigger.”

The final showdown of the 2014/15 Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) will come off on Saturday, March 21, 2015 between Idas Sports RFC and Cosmos Buffaloes RFC. The big question is if Idas Sports can defend their title successfully and become the first team to win the title back to back or will the Buffaloes spoil their party this time round and win the coveted Ghana Rugby Club Championship title?

Mr. Herbert Mensah, the President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, said that he was pleased with the way the Club Championship has turned out and extended his gratitude to Accra Breweries who supported the semi-finals by providing water for the occasion.

“The finals on the 21st of March is poised to provide an exciting event between the winners of the semi-finals, Cosmos Buffaloes and Idas Sports, and we invite everybody to attend the battle at the Legon pitch,” Mr. Mensah said.
