President John Evans Atta Mills has denied reports that Ghana intends to supply Togo with water to help that country to address its water needs. “I am aware of that,” he said, in answer to a question by the media relating to recent reports suggesting an agreement to that effect. The President was answering a number of questions from the media yesterday shortly before meeting visiting Togolese President, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, at the Castle in Accra. He said the government had not made any move to transport water to neighboring Togo, saying, “that has never been under consideration”. The priority of his administration, he said, was to ensure that Ghana has sufficient water and energy supply. "Water is life," he said, indicating that government would have to consider local demand before considering demands from outside. That notwithstanding, he said, Ghana was prepared to collaborate with Togo in various areas such as energy and trade towards enhancing the economies of both countries. "Let us see our strengths and their strengths, and see how we can work together to improve the welfare of our people," he said. Recent media reports quoting Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) sources spoke about Ghana's intention to sell water to Togo, igniting reactions from sections of the public suggesting that such a move would be inappropriate. One school of thought argued that there was nothing wrong with Ghana selling water to Togo since that could fetch the country some revenue as well as improve trade with Togo. Another however said, it was inappropriate for Ghana to export water when many Ghanaians still lacked that essential commodity. President Mills also pledged Ghana's commitment to cooperate with the government of Togo towards removing the bottlenecks that hinder effective trade between the two neighbouring countries.
