As part of efforts to support the fight against the novel Coronavirus pandemic, the Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund has donated a consignment of high-end tertiary care Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to the Ga East Hospital in Accra.
The presentation was made at a brief ceremony on Tuesday, April 1, 2020 at the hospital premises.
In attendance were some trustees of the Covid-19 Private Sector Fund, the National Coordinator for Case Management and Treatment, Dr Ali Samba and other stakeholders. The fund was represented Kwaku Bediako of CH Group, Dan Sackey, MD of Ecobank Ghana, Julian Opuni, MD of Fidelity Bank, Samuel Laing, President of the Contract Cleaners Association of Ghana and Senyo Hosi, CEO of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors.
Dr Justice Yankson, General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association, who also serves as the Chairman of the Technical Committee for the Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund stated that donation of the items is to encourage the management of the Ga East Hospital to continue with the role they have played so far to help the nation deal with Coronavirus pandemic.
“We are here to donate these 2,200 assorted forms of the PPE; specifically, we chose the high level that is needed especially for the secondary and tertiary care that you deliver to patients requiring critical care,” Dr. Yankson said.
“The Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund is happy to be part of the activity. We will continue to explore other areas that we can support you to ensure that the patients who are in here get the best of care. But most importantly, [we also care about] the safety and protection of the [health] personnel.”
Items donated included coveralls, rubber aprons, nurses caps, N95 face masks, gum boots, disposable gowns, re-useable goggles and face shields, among others.
The National Coordinator for Case Management and Treatment, Dr Ali Samba who received the items on behalf of the hospital applauded the Covid-19 Private Sector Fund for supporting the campaign against coronavirus. He said that government is appreciative of the support and contributions the private sector has made towards dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, particularly in helping supply the needs of hospitals and frontline health professionals.
“On behalf of the facility, the Ministry of Health, and everyone, we will like to thank the Covid-19 Private Sector Fund for this donation. The donation is very timely because as at now we have close to sixty patients, four in ICU, and we need these PPEs to take very good care of them,” Dr. Samba said.
“We are so grateful to you, and we know you have bigger plans for the facility. We promise you that whatever you’ve given us, we will use them to care for the patients. We are praying that together we shall conquer Covid-19.”
The Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund is an initiative by private business people who set it up with a seed fund of One Million Ghana Cedis, while campaigning to raise at least One Hundred Million Ghana Cedis from local and international businesses as well as the general public to aid the fight against Covid-19 in Ghana.
