The Ghana Football Association has distanced itself from reports that it will send its doctors to verify the nature of Michael Essien’s injury and have slammed what it calls the unfair conspiracy theories that have been making the rounds in the local media after the player’s injury.
Essien limped off in Chelsea’s Uefa Champions League meeting with Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus but such is the deep seated suspicion about Essien’s commitment to Ghana.
But the GFA say they will not be sending doctors to do any independent tests on the player because they have no reason to suspect foul play.
“We have asked our own doctors to collaborate with Chelsea so we are on the same page about the player’s recovery but we are not sending our doctors to go and verify the extent of the injury again,” Randy Abbey executive committee member of the GFA and spokesman said.
“If we did that we will be saying we don’t trust the player, that we don’t trust the club when we have no basis to doubt them.”
Abbey also says some of the things that have been suggested in the wake of the injury have been negative.
“We did not send a GFA doctor to verify Stephen Appiah’s injury, we have not sent one to verify John Mensah’s injury so what is the point in doing that for Essien?
We think rather than peddle in conspiracy theories Ghanaians should be praying for him to recover quickly and play his part for Ghana because he is a very important player for the Black Stars,” he adds.
