The Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament says monies she received from GETFund scholarship scheme which is meant for brilliant but needy students was to enable her serve her constituents better.
Her comments come in reaction to reports of her name appearing among other government appointees and MPs who benefitted from the GETFund scholarship.
“…the purpose was to attend a program at the Harvard Kennedy School to enable me serve my Constituents, Parliament and Nation better,” the Dome-Kwabenya MP wrote.
Sarah Adwoa Safo got some $12,800 as living allowance while the tuition fees were $17,004 for a Conference at the Harvard Kennedy School in the US.
The legislator, in her defense on Facebook, said the tone in which the news was reported in the media is “an attempt to smear my reputation as a Member of Parliament and Minister of State and box me into a self serving public official.”
Meanwhile, there is widespread anger over the development with many calling for reforms and fairness in the implementation of the scheme.
Most were of the view that public officials whether in power or in opposition, do not qualify under the poor, needy but brilliant category stated in the GETFund Act, 2000 (Act 581). They are also questioning the process used by the Secretariat to grant scholarships to students. Find the full report belowLatest Stories
