Gang attacks Adukrom residents in Kumasi

A group of armed men has allegedly attacked residents of Adukrom in Kumasi, looting shops and snatching mobile phones and unspecified amount of money from their victims at gunpoint. The incident, which occurred about 8.30 p.m. on Sunday, saw many people running for cover as the masked young men fired gunshots indiscriminately and brandished machetes. One person was reported to have received injuries but that is yet to be confirmed. A resident, Umar Sulemana, told graphic.com.gh that the armed men could be part of gangsters from Asawasi and Aboabo who continued to terrorise residents of Adukrom and nearby suburbs. According to him, the armed men, some of whom wore masks, started shooting in the area, resulting in terrified residents running for cover. In the midst of the shooting, the armed men looted shops and attacked anyone they met, taking away cash and mobile phones. The attack continued for about 30 minutes before the police came in, by which time the attackers had disappeared. Confirming the incident, the Asawasi District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jacob Kumi, told this paper that no one had been arrested. He expressed regret that nobody from the community called the police during the attack, saying it was just yesterday morning that the Krontihene of the town went to officially inform him about the attack. According to the commander, it was the police patrol team that happened to arrive in the community after the attackers had left. That notwithstanding, DSP Kumi indicated that the police would continue with their investigations into the attack, with the view to arresting the perpetrators. He entreated the residents not to hesitate to report any criminal activity to the police for prompt action. To ensure improved security in the area, the district commander said that the police would very soon erect a tent at Adukrom, from where the police would operate on a permanent basis. Currently, the only nearby police station is at Asawasi. In recent times, there have been several reports of young men forming armed gangs in some of the Zongo communities from where they move out to attack their victims. In May 2012, the police arrested 11 of them after an operation in the central part of the city about 10 p.m.
