Gambian massacre survivor: God saved me

The sole survivor of the brutal massacre of 44 Ghanaians in The Gambia allegedly on the orders of The Gambian president, Yahya Jammeh has spoken of his traumatic experience and subsequent escape and attributed it to God. Martin Kyere, 29, who has refused to talk about the harrowing experience until now because he has been experiencing flashbacks of the incident, said he was part of a group of 50 Ghanaians who were arrested while trying to make contacts with a boat that was to take them to Spain. Speaking to Joy News, Kyere said they embarked on the journey to Europe through The Gambia in search of greener pastures. While in The Gambia awaiting the boat that would take them to Europe, they were arrested by The Gambian security services. According to him, after spending two weeks in the custody of the police and military, they were told that they were being released. But instead of being released, they were taken into a forest and massacred. According to Kyere, they were taken one after the other, stripped naked, their hands tied with copper wires and killed. He told Joy News that as the soldiers were driving them to their death, he jumped out of the pick-up truck in which they were being transported and escaped. Meanwhile, some family members of the dead are asking government to act and demand an answer from President Jammeh.
