The Managing Director of Galaxy International School, Mehmet Akmermer, has called on all people of the world regardless of their race and nationality to embrace diverse cultures and different beliefs to make the world a better place of peace, love and unity.
Speaking at the 18th edition of the annual Inter-cultural Festival 2024 on Saturday, February 24 at the school’s Ashaley Botwe branch in Accra on the theme “Wearing the fabric of peace, love and unity”, Mr Akmermer said, “Just as a skilled weaver carefully crafts each threat into a beautiful textile, so too we can weave together the fabric of a better world. Each thread represents a unique individual, a diverse culture, and a different belief.”
He added “In a world often torn apart by division and contention, it is important that we show compassion and understanding. Instead of seeing our differences as barriers, let us embrace them as the vibrant colours that enrich the fabric of humanity.”
The inter-cultural festival is an annual event on the school’s calendar, with the sole purpose of reminding the world of the need to accept cultural differences and learn to live peacefully with each other.
This year’s event had students representing 32 different nations as proof of the better world the school is striving for.
The yearly multicultural celebration saw hundreds of participants mostly parents and guardians and passersby who walked in to catch a glimpse of the colourful event.
The Managing Director of one of the prestigious schools in Ghana with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and learning, in his opening address, noted that the school is built on a foundation of unity, acceptance of diversity and peaceful coexistence.
He explained that while peace is the absence of conflict, it is also the presence of justice, equality and respect for one another.
“Let us weave peace into the very fabric of our societies, stitching together communities that thrive on cooperation and harmony.”
Love, the most powerful force in the universe, binds us together in ways that transcend borders and languages. It is the fiber that joins hearts, connecting gaps between us and nurturing compassion and kindness. Let us weave love into every interaction, spreading warmth and understanding wherever we go” he added.
According to him, unity is the strength that arises from solidarity and collaboration and is critical to overcoming the challenges that the world faces. “When we stand together, shoulder to shoulder, we are unstoppable. Let us weave unity into the fabric of our world.”
He said it was important for children who are the future of any society, to be nurtured with the values of peace, love and unity.
Let us commit ourselves to the noble task of building a world where every thread is valued, every colour is celebrated, and every voice is heard. The diversity, the uniqueness and talent of each child are what makes everything we do beautiful,” he said about the school.
Together, let us weave a fabric of hope, a masterpiece that generations to come will look upon with wonder and admiration” he concluded.
The Chairman for the 18th edition of the annual Inter-cultural Festival 2024, Aremeyaw Ibn Saeed, who’s also an Executive Member of the school’s board, also mentioned that with the current happenings around the world, the theme for the event was most appropriate.
He said it was essential for the world to continuously work towards the promotion of peace and unity through dialogue and positive interpersonal relationships.
“Indeed, the fuel that ignites the flames of peace should far exceed that of disputes and disagreements,” he noted, commending the school for constantly promoting multiculturalism, educating people and reminding them of the importance of peaceful coexistence, tolerance and neighbourliness.
There was a display of various paraphernalia and artefacts showcasing the rich culture of the various nationalities amidst music, dance, choreography, drama, poetry and others.
The event commenced with the primary and secondary sections singing the Ghanaian national anthem which was beautifully delivered.
Among the highlights of the exciting performances for the day were the Chinese Dragon dance, the Indian traditional Bharathanatiyam, and the Atsiagbekor dance of the Ewe tribe in Ghana’s Volta Region.
The preschoolers had an experience of their lives while performing what they called “Unity Dance.”
Parents, guardians and other guests were full of joy and praise for the management and the students for putting together such a splendid performance.
Renowned Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame, affectionately referred to as the “Rap Doctor”, climaxed the event with a performance to the admiration of both the young and old.
Galaxy International School operates both the British and Ghanaian curriculum and offers a competitive environment for academic excellence with about 100% university placement for its students.
Hundreds of students of the school are found in more than 50 prestigious universities across the globe.
The school is also committed to exposing its students to great opportunities. To this end, they have competed in several international Olympiads, receiving several laurels.
